Legends of Cutting

The legends were young
when the range was still open
The cattle still roamed on the land
and they watched and they listend
They learned from the old ones
the business of makin' a hand
They still remember the days
with the wagon
working cattle in the old cowboy way
and though times have changed
the legends ride on
and they're still riding with us today

[Chorus:]
Buster and Shorty
Matlock and Don
Mr. Pat is still horseback still keeping on
There is a new generation
and they are coming on strong
but where would we all be today
if the legends of cutting
had not shown us the way

[Chorus:]
Buster and Shorty
Matlock and Don
Mr. Pat is still horseback still keeping on
There is a new generation
and they are coming on strong
but where would we all be today
if the legends of cutting
had not shown us the way

Axe Handles

One afternoon the last week in April
Showing Kai how to throw a hatchet
One-half turn and it sticks in a stump.
He recalls the hatchet-head
Without a handle, in the shop
And go gets it, and wants it for his own.
A broken-off axe handle behind the door
Is long enough for a hatchet,
We cut it to length and take it
With the hatchet head
And working hatchet, to the wood block.
There I begin to shape the old handle
With the hatchet, and the phrase
First learned from Ezra Pound
Rings in my ears!
'When making an axe handle
the pattern is not far off.'
And I say this to Kai
'Look: We'll shape the handle
By checking the handle
Of the axe we cut with—'
And he sees. And I hear it again:
It's in Lu Ji's Wên Fu, fourth century
A.D. 'Essay on Literature'-—in the
Preface: 'In making the handle
Of an axe
By cutting wood with an axe
The model is indeed near at hand.'
My teacher Shih-hsiang Chen
Translated that and taught it years ago
And I see: Pound was an axe,
Chen was an axe, I am an axe
And my son a handle, soon
To be shaping again, model
And tool, craft of culture,
How we go on.

Rhymes and Reasons (John Denver Cover)

So you speak to me of sadness
And the coming of the winter
Fear that is within you now
It seems to never end
And the dreams that have escaped you
And the hope that you've forgotten
You tell me that you need me now
You want to be my friend

And you wonder where we're going
Where's the rhyme, where's the reason?
And it's you cannot accept
It is here, we must begin
To seek the wisdom of the children
And the graceful way of flowers in the wind

For the children and the flowers
Are my sisters and my brothers
Their laughter and their loveliness
Could clear a cloudy day
Like the music of the mountains
And the colors of the rainbow
They're a promise of the future
And a blessing for today

Though the cities start to crumble
And the towers fall around us
The sun is slowly fading
And it's colder than the sea
It is written: From the desert
To the mountains, they shall lead us
By the hand and by the heart
They will comfort you and me
In their innocence and trusting
They will teach us to be free

For the children and the flowers
Are my sisters and my brothers
Their laughter and their loveliness
Could clear a cloudy day
And the song that I am singing
Is a prayer to non-believers
Come and stand beside us
We can find a better way

Rainy Day People

Rainy day people always seem to know
When it's time to call
Rainy day people don't talk
They just listen till they heard it all
Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell you
They been down like you
Rainy day people don't mind
If you're crying a tear or two

If you get lonely
All you really need is that rainy day love
Rainy day people all know
There's no sorrow they can't rise above
Rainy day lovers don't love any others
That would not be kind
Rainy day people all know how it hangs
On their peace of mind

Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell you
They been down there, too
Rainy day people don't mind
If you're crying a tear or two

Rainy day people always seem to know
When you're feeling blue
High-stepping strutters who land in the gutters
Sometimes need one, too
Take it or leave it, or try to believe it
If you been down too long
Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside
They just pass it on
Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside
They just pass it on

If It's Good (Then I Want It)

If it's good, then I want it
If it's bad, I don't need it
If it's good , then I crave it
If it's bad, you can save it

Now my mama told me long ago
'If you want get along
Then there's one thing that you ought to know
It's right, from wrong

If it's good, then I want it
If it's bad, you can give it to the people who
That want to win a devil
But if it's good, then I want it
